Dabei kam Telemann zu Gute, dass er schon von Jugend an mit den spieltechnischen Eigenheiten verschiedenster Instrumente vertraut war: »ausser Clavier (Violine) und Flöte« hatte er sich »annoch mit dem Hoboe, der Traverse, dem Schalümo, der Gambe ec. biß auf den Contrabaß und die Quint-Posaune« bekannt gemacht. So konnte er in seinen Duos, Trios und Quartetten nicht nur die Ansprüche versierter Profimusiker bedienen, sondern auch die ambitionierter Liebhaber aus bürgerlichen Kreisen. Und damit war er sehr erfolgreich, denn seine Kammermusik war mit ihrem galanten und empfindsamen Ton neu und doch fest in der Tradition verwurzelt.
