Aufs Ganze gesehen war Krommers Vierte seine erfolgreichste Sinfonie. Und wenn man Krommers vierte Sinfonie mit ihrem vorwärts drängenden Gestus als seine „dramatische“ bezeichnen könnte, so drängt sich für seine fünfte die Kennzeichnung „Festsymphonie“ auf. In seiner siebten Symphonie nimmt Krommer in gewisser Weise den dramatischen Gestus der Vierten wieder auf; er realisiert ihn aber auf eine Art, die man als archaisierend oder historisierend bezeichnen könnte. Gleich die Langsame Einleitung des Kopfsatzes beginnt mit einem im Unisono präsentierten Thema, das mit seinen doppelten Punktierungen dem Typus der französischen Ouvertüre vom Beginn des 18. Generally considered, No. 4 was Franz Krommer’s most successful symphony. If one may term it his »Dramatic Symphony« because of its energetic forward motion, then »Festive Symphony« is the title suggesting itself for No. 5. In No. 7 Krommer to a certain extent returns to the dramatic character of No. 4 but generates it in a manner that might be termed archaizing or historicizing. The slow introduction of the first movement immediately begins with a theme presented in unison that with its double dotting seems to have been imported directly from the French overture type of the early eighteenth century.
